It’s been dark but now I see Why the light of the moon won’t shine on me Somethings just aren’t meant to be I’ll just sit and look at time Some days go by just fine And some days are just some days I guess they’ll never come No they’ll never come Beck’s talking nightmares on my radio Poetry in the night And if the world Doesn’t end tomorrow Then I will be alright Yeah She has a quiet beauty She speaks in gentle tones Life goes on I must move on Even unwillingly Somethings aren’t meant to be Like the attack of the killer bees Like a man sitting in a tree Like you and me Like you and me Beck’s talking nightmares on my radio Poetry in the night And if the world Doesn’t end tomorrow Then I will be alright Yeah I’m moving on As best I can But I am a man Sitting in a tree Goodnight my sweet one I’m moving on I’m moving on Goodbye my sweet one I’m moving on to sing my songs Beck’s talking nightmares on my radio Poetry in the night And if the world Doesn’t end tomorrow Then I will be alright Said if the world Won’t end tomorrow Then we will be alright Yeah

Where are all the words when I need them Where are all the birds when I’m feeling grounded Where is the sea when I’m feeling landlocked Where is the me when I look into the mirror Where is the sky When my eyes are cloudy Where is the cry When the tears won’t come What are all these dreams I’m having when I’m sleeping What are these dreams When I’m trying to sleep They’re all wrapped up in my thoughts of you Like a perfect bow on a birthday present in June They’re all wrapped up in my thoughts of you Like a perfect bow on a birthday present in June In June What is the feeling when it isn’t love What are these words I write if it isn’t you I’m thinking of What is the colour of your favourite afternoon What is the secret of the spinning room What are the chances Of finding another lifetime What are these dreams When I’m trying to sleep What are the chances Of finding another lifetime What are these dreams When I’m trying to sleep They’re all wrapped up in my thoughts of you Like a perfect bow on a birthday present in June They’re all wrapped up in my thoughts of you Like a perfect bow on a birthday present in June In June

Woke up this morning dreaming bout you and me Walking hand in hand through an airport Mexico City Woke up this morning dreaming bout sun and sand Blue kyanite on the pillow Costa Rican shell in my hand Woke up this morning feeling slightly hungover Then I felt ok cause you made me drink that water Well I woke up this morning On the wrong side of an empty bed And I walked right into the wall And I hit my head Well there’s nowhere in this town To steal a pretty flower For a pretty girl No not at this hour There’s nowhere in this town To steal a pretty flower For a pretty girl No not at this hour In this silly town This syrupy silly town Whoa oooo Woke up this morning with the scent of a rose Dancing on my pillow Well the sunrise grows Woke up this morning with this god damn pop song in my head Spinning in my mind Being hypnotized And so I wrote this song For the most beautiful girl So I wrote this song For the most beautiful girl There’s nowhere in this town To steal a pretty flower For a pretty girl No not at this hour There’s nowhere in this town To steal a pretty flower For a pretty girl No not at this hour In this silly town This syrupy silly town Whoa oooo So I wrote this song For the most beautiful girl So I wrote this song For the most beautiful girl There’s nowhere in this town To steal a pretty flower For a pretty girl No not at this hour There’s nowhere in this town To steal a pretty flower For a pretty girl No not at this hour In this silly town This syrupy silly town Whoa oooo Whoa oooo Whoa oooo

Went to sleep on a Waterloo couch Dreaming bout the West Coast Grilled cheese just ain’t the same And I still can’t talk about lemonade A hope springs in my eyes I was wearing cheap sunglasses Thought I’d find my dream In the summer of 99 Let’s go to the tractor pull To watch those tractors pull Let’s go to the rodeo Maybe if you want to go I could meet you in Saskatchewan I could meet you in Saskatchewan I could love you in Saskatchewan Dream of the days Spent together Try and find a way To get by Let’s go to the milky way Try to find another day Let’s swim by the coastal line Maybe if I lose my mind in time Let’s go to the tractor pull To watch those tractors pull Let’s go to the rodeo Maybe if you want to go I’ll meet you in Saskatchewan I could meet you in Saskatchewan I could love you in Saskatchewan International harvesters rolling down A golden ocean of ideas Miles of conversation Sunshine and hangovers Well the wolves have come for me to comfort me Today I heard their call Maybe I’ll see the world Through green eyes goodbye Let’s go to the tractor pull To watch those tractors pull Let’s go to the rodeo Maybe if you want to go I could meet you in Saskatchewan I could meet you in Saskatchewan I could love you in Saskatchewan I could love you in Saskatchewan

I used to run the rat race I used to be on time Used to drive a fast pace I was afraid of trying Used to stay up late night Watching my TV Lying awake waiting for my destiny Lately I’ve been dreaming about a four-legged friend of mine Just me and my best friend Now I’m not afraid of dying Yes lately I’ve been dreaming about a four-legged friend of mine Just me and my best friend Now I’m not afraid of dying Not afraid of dying Cause Life is a good horse We go riding to the zoo Life is a good horse There ain’t nothing he can’t do Life is a good horse We go to the rodeo Life is a good horse don’t ya know Don’t ya know Well put that full moon in your pocket There’s enough light from these stars Little black eagle flying overhead Watching us till the soil Well there’s a long row left to hoe Yeah Yeah our ship’s still out at sea Dreams are like the beams holding up the barn They’ll last forever if we build them strong Yes dreams are like the beams holding up our barn They’ll last forever if we build them strong If we build them strong Yeah cause Life is a good horse We go riding to the zoo Life is a good horse There ain’t nothing he can’t do Life is a good horse We go to the rodeo Life is a good horse don’t ya know Don’t ya know Don’t ya know Well time on the farm Makes your heart grow warm Time on the land Dreams of something grand Well we could tend them free-range chickens We could collect their free-range eggs There’s nothing like a country breakfast On a country sunny day There’s nothing like a country breakfast On a country sunny day Hey hey Cause Life is a good horse We go riding to the zoo Life is a good horse There ain’t nothing he can’t do Life is a good horse We go to the rodeo Life is a good horse don’t ya know Don’t ya know

As casual as golf shoes I’m a crow trying to be a songbird As relaxed as peanut butter and jam I’m a man Trying to make my way I don’t feel alone any more I’m a wolf here in yellow sunglasses I am a mountain lion Down by the river I’m floating I’m floating Here we go I’m floating out to inner space I’m tripping over words I’m falling up a downward escalator Falling up I’m falling down Sat down trying to write a sad song God knows yeah god knows I’m trying All these pictures on the wall Are they haunting or are they familiar Little things that remind me of you They slowly get put away I am a mountain lion Down by the river I’m floating I’m floating Here we go I’m floating out to inner space I’m tripping over words I’m falling up a downward escalator Falling up I’m falling down Does a wish go as far When you are not wishing upon the first star Star-crossed lovers Maybe it was cloudy on the night we met I don’t feel alone any more I’m a wolf here in yellow sunglasses I am a mountain lion Down by the river I’m floating I’m floating Here we go I’m floating out to inner space I’m tripping over words I’m falling up a downward escalator I’m falling up I’m falling down Falling up a downward escalator Falling up I’m falling down Falling up a downward escalator Falling up I’m falling down Falling up a downward escalator

Your picture’s a little faded now Growing hazy at the edges Cigarette hits my screaming lungs Carbon monoxide waste of time Your joy’s a little faded now Echoing on distant breezes Thoughts and tumbleweed memories Signals cross and static raids The peak of a mountain is a good place to be Constant motion for a constant world What is the spin of this constant swirl Sometimes I wonder If two out of three ain’t bad Sometimes I wonder If two out of three ain’t bad Maybe five out of six would be better Would it be better Would it be better Would it be better This candlelight reminds me of someone Though I won’t admit exactly who At least not to myself For the self in myself has stepped away Seasons change and so do I Has it spun out of control There is indeed courage in an ashtray again What if the past should meet the future Somewhere on a crowded street What if yesterday should meet tomorrow Somewhere in between these beats Sometimes I wonder If two out of three ain’t bad Sometimes I wonder If two out of three ain’t bad Maybe five out of six would be better Would it be better Would it be better Could it be better Maybe a tree will grow Right here where I once stood Maybe a prairie flower will grow Where I lay now Maybe my star will shine Somewhere into liquid time Maybe a dream will come That doesn’t end in sublime wine There are many trees and rivers Disappearing without a trace There are many birds and flowers Living up here in outer space Sometimes I wonder If two out of three ain’t bad Sometimes I wonder If two out of three ain’t bad Maybe five out of six would be better Would it be better Would it be better Could it be better

Where would I be Said the tree To the sky so far above Where would I be Without your breeze Tell me Where would I be What would I do Said the canoe To the stream Where could I go With nowhere to row Tell me Where could I go Well this I know yeah There’s a glow of Life in me One thing’s for sure my Heart is pure When you say those words to me To me Where would I be Said the sea To the floor so far below Where would I be Without you supporting me Tell me Where would I be Well this I know yeah There’s a glow of Life in me One thing’s for sure my Heart is pure When you say those words to me Well this I know There’s a glow of Life in me One thing’s for sure My heart is pure When you say those words to me

Now I know which way the wind blows Now I know which way the wind blows The sands of time Drift in a year Where are we now I guess we are here Think that sometimes fate is taken by surprise The sun does set This phoenix does rise I’m taken away To some other day To a place I can go To a place I can stay and now I know which way the wind blows Now I know which way the wind blows Here comes the chorus I’m a lo-fi indie rocker Like Betty Crocker you just add water Tonight I’ll be your jukebox Yes tonight I’ll be your jukebox I’m looking for that great Canadian love affair I can drink lots of beer I can have hockey hair All this beer helps me realize Just where I am when I look in your eyes The edge of a nebula The birth of a star In the midst of time In the mists of time and now I know which way the wind blows Now I know which way the wind blows Here comes the chorus I’m a lo-fi indie rocker Like Betty Crocker you just add water Tonight I’ll be your jukebox Yes tonight I’ll be your jukebox Well tonight I’ll gladly sleep alone With one eye swollen shut in my green pajamas Think I’ve finally found a home For my mind It’s inside and now I know which way the wind blows Now I know which way the wind blows Here comes the chorus I’m a lo-fi indie rocker Like Betty Crocker you just add water Tonight I’ll be your jukebox Yes tonight I’ll be your jukebox Well tonight I’ll be your Lo-fi indie rocker Said tonight I’ll be your Lo-fi indie rocker

about

With almost 30 years of songwriting behind me, I have kept various songbooks during that time, each one filled with old favourites and long-forgotten tunes. Some were instant classics, while others were set aside as my songwriting style evolved. Looking back now, it is interesting to see how each city I was living in at the time invoked different styles due to different life experiences and adventures.

It has been fascinating for me personally, to move forward with these songs, reinventing them in 2021 and looking back at the people, places and events that inspired me. Every step on the journey has brought me to right now...

The album title, Free Range Muffins, has been an idea, pictured in my mind for many years. Since this collection of songs reaches back as far as 1994 and spans several eras of my songwriting, I felt it was the perfect visual representation for this batch of songs.

In listening to this album, I hope your audio journey is as fun as it has been for me to live, write, and record these songs.
