Manitoba Maple

from Twilight Songs by Andrew Rodger

/

about

Over the years, I have become a big believer that the Universe gives us signs to help guide us. If we miss the small ones, they will get bigger.

Written in 2000 as I contemplated my next steps in life, the signs were pointing at a return to North Vancouver. So, I headed West again, where I met the girl of my dreams - my wife Dianne.

lyrics

Twilight is descending
Somewhere on my horizon
I’m longing for the prairies again
Open space and time
I’m running with the wolves in my dreams again
Maybe I should get out of here
Red tailed hawk almost slams into the window
To get my attention

Take a cue from a girl I knew
Search for beauty
There’s a prairie wind that’s kicking in
Blowing through my soul
I’m left to my own devices
To find my way to the full moon
There’s a prairie wind that’s kicking in
Blowing through my soul

There’s a ghost of a girl with a phantom curl
Lingering in my dreams
A trace of a face from a future place
Dancing in my mind
Well time flies faster time flies hard
Like recycled paper made of old birthday cards
This empty paper bag used to hold
This empty bottle of wine

Take a cue from a girl I knew
Find my way to beauty
There’s a prairie fire burning wild
Somewhere in my soul
Weaver of the web weave our lives together again
I remember you
There’s a prairie fire burning higher
Somewhere in my soul

There’s a Manitoba Maple beside a fence post
Bending in the breeze
An unknown name is on my lips
An unknown song is in the air
There’s a ghost of a girl with a phantom curl
Lingering in my dreams
There’s a ghost of a girl with a phantom curl
I remember you

Take a cue from a girl I knew
Live in beauty
There’s a prairie flower finding her power
Just beyond that ridge
There’s a ghost of a girl with a phantom curl
Lingering in my dreams
There’s a prairie flower finding her power
Just beyond that ridge
There’s a prairie flower finding her power
Just beyond that ridge
